Special Processes
Randy uses a special process for removing the excess meat and skin from the skull of the trophy antlers. He uses the aide of the dermestid beetle, also know as the flesh eating beetle, to completely clean the skull in a way that no human hand can. These beetles completely remove any remaining flesh, skin, and fibers from the animal, leaving nothing but a pearly white skull and perfectly preserved antlers.
Dermestid beetles are a specialized species of beetle that eats only animal flesh. Dermestid beetles are the longstanding preferred method of preparing skulls, used by many museums and universities around the world. Preparing skulls with dermestid beetles has several advantages over other methods, such as boiling or composting.
The beetle can get into the cracks and crevices of the animal and remove excess flesh without the need for human tools. This process ensures that the skull remains in its original condition without the worry of tool marks, scratches or chips. Many taxidermists actually damage the skull with tools and remove the nasal bones of said skulls while attempting to "fix" the damage they created. With this process you will have the entire skull in perfect condition.
Another main advantage of Randy's process is that you will never have to worry about foul odors or smells as the beetles remove all traces of meat and emulsified fats within the bone itself. If there is absolutely nothing but bone, there is nothing left to cause a foul smell. Randy currently maintains a colony of dermestid beetles reaching numbers of more than 5000 to ensure your European mount is processed and ready in the shortest amount of time possible.
